This course aims to support Teaching Assistants in their work with pupils who have difficulty in understanding and applying the grammar requirements of the KS2 curriculum.

Suitable for TAs and HLTAs who support literacy at KS2 or KS3.

The session will focus on aspects of grammar that KS2 and KS3 pupils often find difficult, offering subject knowledge as well as practical strategies and approaches for TAs supporting pupils to remedy gaps in learning and apply learned skills to writing.

The course will:

  • consolidate and develop subject knowledge and terminology for the Key Stage 2 grammar curriculum
  • consider the possible difficulties that pupils encounter
  • explore practical, creative strategies and approaches for developing pupils’ understanding of grammar concepts and their application to writing

    Susie Spolander is an experienced primary school teacher and English consultant whose practice includes classroom teaching and senior leadership across the key stages; English consultancy throughout the primary sector; and writing, developing and leading training events and projects in a range of areas to address current educational priorities. For this work, she has been awarded the Gold Quality Mark for Professional Development by the London Institute of Education. Susie also holds the Every Child Counts trainer accreditation from Edge Hill University and the Inference Training accreditation from Leicester City Council. Throughout her career, Susie has enjoyed leading on a number of action-research projects, focused on developing specific areas of English, such as spoken language, writing for more able pupils, phonics and GPS. Susie is passionate about finding innovative ways to inspire teachers and engage learners, so works alongside school leaders, class teachers and support staff to support school development through a range of training, leadership and classroom-based approaches.
