This is a six hour course, run over two sessions.

With the ever-increasing demands of teaching and assessment in Years 5 and 6, this two-part course aims to support Year 5 and Year 6 teachers by offering positive, practical approaches to the English curriculum and end of Key Stage 2 assessments.

This course is intended for teachers new to teaching in Year 5 or Year 6, as well as experienced Year 5/6 teachers looking to refresh their practice.

Year 5 and Year 6 colleagues could attend together so that the approaches to the curriculum and preparation for end of Key Stage 2 assessments are spread across the phase.

The course will:

  • address the requirements of the Year 5/6 Programme of Study for English and the associated assessment frameworks, including national tests
  • unpick the programmes of study for reading, grammar and writing, offering practical and enjoyable teaching approaches
  • explore creative ways to develop and maintain pupils' independence, motivation and enthusiasm in reading and writing
  • offer effective strategies to prepare pupils for the end of Key Stage 2 tests
  • provide activities and takeaway resources to support best classroom practice

    Susie Spolander is an experienced primary school teacher and English consultant whose practice includes classroom teaching and senior leadership across the key stages; English consultancy throughout the primary sector; and writing, developing and leading training events and projects in a range of areas to address current educational priorities. For this work, she has been awarded the Gold Quality Mark for Professional Development by the London Institute of Education. Susie also holds the Every Child Counts trainer accreditation from Edge Hill University and the Inference Training accreditation from Leicester City Council. Throughout her career, Susie has enjoyed leading on a number of action-research projects, focused on developing specific areas of English, such as spoken language, writing for more able pupils, phonics and GPS. Susie is passionate about finding innovative ways to inspire teachers and engage learners, so works alongside school leaders, class teachers and support staff to support school development through a range of training, leadership and classroom-based approaches.

    Quest for Learning courses are now held in the Aureus (secondary) School building on Great Western Park, on the edge of Didcot. 

    The Aureus School is situated 5 minutes from the Milton interchange on the A34 if you are coming from the north, and 8 minutes from the Chilton interchange if you are coming from the south. 

    There is plenty of free street parking on streets nearby. 

    Please report to reception on arrival. 

    If you are planning on coming by train, do let us know and we will arrange to collect you from Didcot Parkway.
