This series of three sessions aims to support Year 6 teachers to develop their understanding and application of the statutory Teacher Assessment Framework for Writing through termly opportunities to meet and moderate with Year 6 colleagues. Teachers may attend all three sessions, or select individual sessions from the course. Each session must be booked individually. We are currently hoping to hold the second and third session 'in person' in the Spring and Summer terms respectively, although this will be under review.
Session 1 – Securing the Expected Standard ONLINE
In this session, teachers will secure their understanding of the ‘Pupil can’ statements relating to the expected standard and explore teaching approaches to develop their pupils’ writing towards these. Participants will then moderate samples of writing to develop and secure their understanding of the expected standard in context and to consider next steps for their own pupils.

- Explore creative teaching approaches to develop and secure pupils’ writing skills towards the ‘Pupil can’ statements
- Participate in moderation of pupils’ writing in order to discuss, refine and secure judgements and next steps
This first session will take the form of an interactive online workshop. You will receive in advance all the handouts and resources for you to fully participate and during the session, participation tools will be used such as practical activities, breakout groups for discussion and opportunities for questions throughout.
Session 2 – Greater Depth
In the second session, teachers will focus on the ‘Pupil can’ statements relating to the greater depth standard and explore texts, resources and teaching approaches to develop their pupils as writers. Moderation and discussion of higher attaining pupils’ writing will then support teachers to gain an understanding of the greater depth criteria in context and to consider next steps for their pupils.
Session 3 – Cross-school moderation
In the final session, teachers will have an opportunity to moderate and discuss pupils’ writing from across the standards, agreeing or refining judgements with colleagues from other schools and discussing next steps to secure standards by the end of the teacher assessment period.
