Many schools are identifying spelling as a priority across the year groups and are working to develop learning and teaching in this area. In many cases, TAs are involved in supporting the teaching of whole class and group spelling, as well as supporting pupils to apply spelling strategies when writing.
This interactive online course is designed to provide TAs with an understanding of the curriculum for spelling and its associated subject knowledge, as well as an opportunity to explore strategies and approaches for engaging pupils in investigating, learning and applying spelling. Included in the workshop will be games and activities to teach and practise spelling concepts, as well as ideas for the application of spelling within discrete sessions and across the curriculum.
You will receive in advance all the handouts and resources for you to fully participate and, throughout the sessions, there will be opportunities for practical activities, breakout discussion groups and questions.
NB: If you work with pupils in years 4, 5 and 6 who still need support with spelling knowledge from the curriculum for years 1, 2 and 3, you may find it useful to attend the ‘Supporting Spelling in Years 1, 2 & 3’ workshop to gain knowledge and strategies to support them.
Participants will:
• understand the national curriculum requirements for spelling in each year group and the associated subject knowledge and terminology
• explore strategies, activities and resources for teaching spelling
• consider approaches for supporting pupils who find difficulty with learning, remembering and applying spellings
Due to the highly interactive nature of the session, each ticket only admits one delegate.
