With recent research and media coverage reporting a significant ‘word-gap’ for pupils, the development of a wide and rich vocabulary is becoming an ever-increasing priority for many schools. Through practical approaches and activities, this interactive online course will explore the explicit teaching of vocabulary in Early Years and KS1 and the embedding of vocabulary development within reading and writing, as well as across the wider curriculum.

Participants will:

  • consider the current agenda of oracy and vocabulary, including research findings, and reflect on their schools’ position
  • explore best-practice approaches to teaching vocabulary in Early Years and KS1, including strategies, activities and resources
  • understand how to support pupils to develop and apply vocabulary for spoken language, reading and writing across the breadth of the curriculum
